A’ja Wilson Makes History with Fourth WNBA MVP Title
A’ja Wilson has etched her name into the annals of WNBA history by being named the 2025 Most Valuable Player for the fourth time. This achievement marks a new milestone, as she becomes the first player to win the award four times, surpassing previous records held by Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson.
Wilson’s dominance this season was undeniable. She averaged an impressive 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game during the regular season. Her performance earned her 51 out of 72 first-place votes from a panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, totaling 657 points. This placed her ahead of Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier (534 points) and Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas (391 points).
This year’s recognition is particularly significant as it marks the second time Wilson has won the MVP award unanimously, following her 2024 victory. It also highlights her consistency over eight seasons in the league, with the award going to her in half of those years.
A Legacy of Excellence
Since being selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Las Vegas Aces in 2018, Wilson has consistently delivered exceptional performances. Her recent MVP win solidifies her status as one of the greatest players in the league’s history. WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert praised Wilson, highlighting her grace, humility, and humor.
“Since 2020 when we were in the bubble and I handed you your first one (MVP award), I’ve admired the way you’ve lived, your grace, your humility, your humor,” Engelbert said.
Wilson’s impact extends beyond her individual achievements. She has been a seven-time WNBA All-Star and the Aces’ all-time leading scorer. In February, her No. 22 jersey was retired, a testament to her contributions to the team and the league.
Defensive Dominance and Playoff Success
In addition to her offensive prowess, Wilson was also named Defensive Player of the Year for the third time this season. She shared the honor with Alanna Smith of the Minnesota Lynx. Throughout the regular season, Wilson ranked second in the league for blocks with 92 and third for steals with 64.
Her defensive skills were on full display during the playoffs, where she tied her playoff career high of 38 points in a thrilling 74-73 victory over the Seattle Storm. This performance set up a semifinal matchup against the Indiana Fever, which will take place in Las Vegas on Sunday.
A Competitive Season and Future Prospects
Throughout the 2025 season, Napheesa Collier appeared to be the frontrunner for the MVP award. However, her bid was affected by a seven-game absence due to an injury sustained during a game against the Aces. During this period, the Aces went on a 16-game winning streak, during which Wilson averaged 26.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game.
Despite the setback, Collier remains a strong contender for the finals. The Lynx are set to face the Phoenix Mercury in their own best-of-five semifinal series, with the winner advancing to the WNBA finals.
Wilson’s journey this season showcases not only her individual brilliance but also her ability to lead her team through challenges. As the playoffs continue, fans can expect more high-stakes moments from one of the league’s most decorated players.
