“I keep the game close to me,” Sanders said. “I don’t follow it as much, but I like the playoffs because it’s real.”
He also praised the personalities of today’s players, noting that they are more expressive and individualistic than in the past. “The Latin guys and the brothers have always done that, but now you’ve got everybody, you know, they’re doing their thing, man, and I love it.”
The Impact of Shohei Ohtani
Ohtani’s dual-threat ability has opened new doors for young athletes, something Sanders appreciates. “It opens doors for more of these young men that are capable,” he said. “I like that.”
Sanders also recalled how pitchers in his time were often the best athletes on the team. “Most of the time, the pitcher was actually the best athlete on the team,” he said, reminiscing about players like Steve Avery, John Smoltz, and Tom Glavine, who could hit and pitch with ease.
Overcoming Adversity
Sanders’ journey has not been without challenges. In 2025, he faced a life-altering cancer scare that required the removal of his bladder. However, instead of succumbing to despair, he chose to face the challenge head-on. During a news conference in Boulder, Colorado, he shared his experience and encouraged others to remain hopeful.
“It was a tremendous opportunity to get the word out,” Sanders said. “They said, ‘Man, just hold on. You could make it. You could do this.’”
His positive outlook and faith in God have been key to his recovery. “I’m thankful that God chose me to sound the alarms for everyone to know that we can win this fight,” he added.
Balancing Family and Coaching
As the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes, Sanders is focused on preparing his team for the upcoming season. However, he is also balancing his role as a father to his three sons. Shedeur and Shilo, both former players at Colorado, have moved on to pursue careers in the NFL, while Deion Jr. remains in Boulder, running Well Off Media, a production company that supports the football program.
“I’m happy that this is another opportunity for them to reach inside of them and bring something out that they’ve never had to fight and bring out before,” Sanders said. “They would never forget these moments, and I’m thankful that they’re in it.”
