The world’s most peaceful country for 2025

Iceland Named World’s Most Peaceful Country for 2025

Iceland has once again secured its position as the most peaceful country in the world, according to the Global Peace Index (GPI) for 2025. This marks the 17th consecutive year that the Nordic nation has topped the ranking. The GPI, produced by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), evaluates 163 independent states and territories based on factors such as societal safety, domestic and international conflict levels, and militarization.

The report highlights that Iceland’s success is tied to its strong foundation of “Positive Peace,” which includes attitudes, institutions, and structures that foster peaceful societies. Positive Peace is closely linked to higher economic growth, lower interest rates, and greater societal well-being. In addition to being the most peaceful country, Iceland ranks third on the World Happiness Report, further solidifying its reputation as a desirable travel destination.

Top Five Most Peaceful Countries

Alongside Iceland, the top five most peaceful countries in 2025 include Ireland, New Zealand, Austria, and Switzerland. These nations share common traits such as stable governance, low crime rates, and strong social welfare systems. The GPI emphasizes that these countries have created environments where peace is not just the absence of violence but an active, sustainable condition.

The report also notes that the average global peace score has declined by 5.4% since the index was first introduced in 2008. The gap between the most and least peaceful countries has widened by 11.7%, indicating growing disparities in global stability. The 2025 report points to a surge in state-based conflicts, with 59 such conflicts recorded in 2023—the highest number since the end of World War II.

Russia and Ukraine at the Bottom of the Index

For the first time, Russia has been ranked as the least peaceful country in the world, followed closely by Ukraine. Both nations face significant challenges related to ongoing conflicts, high levels of militarization, and instability. The United States, despite its economic and technological strength, ranks 128th on the index, below countries like Honduras, Bangladesh, and Uganda. This is largely due to its high level of militarization, which places it closer to countries like North Korea, Israel, and Venezuela in terms of peace metrics.

In Europe, France is the most militarized country in Western and Central Europe, while South America saw the only regional improvement in peace scores. Peru and Argentina recorded the largest gains, while Canada and Costa Rica were recognized as the most peaceful nations in North and Central America.

Peaceful Destinations in Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is home to several peaceful countries, including Mauritius, Botswana, and Namibia. These nations have thriving tourism industries that attract a wide range of travelers, from honeymooners to adventure seekers and wildlife enthusiasts. Their commitment to maintaining peace and stability has made them popular destinations for those seeking safe and welcoming environments.

Travel Trends and Innovations

As the world continues to grapple with geopolitical tensions, the demand for peaceful and stable travel destinations remains high. This trend is reflected in the growing popularity of road trips, with Scotland’s North Coast 500 gaining renewed attention. Once a lesser-known route, the 516-mile scenic drive around Scotland’s northern coastline has become a major tourist attraction. However, concerns about overtourism have led to efforts to balance visitor numbers with environmental preservation.

Meanwhile, Amtrak has launched its NextGen Acela, a high-speed train service designed to improve travel between Washington, New York, and Boston. Despite delays and infrastructure challenges, the new trains aim to offer faster and more efficient travel options. CNN transportation reporter Alexandra Skores recently tested the service to determine whether the increased fares are justified.

Industry Updates and Travel Tips

Southwest Airlines has also made headlines with its updated seating policy, which has sparked controversy among passengers, particularly plus-size travelers. Meanwhile, a group of tech professionals in their 20s took a career break to sail across the Pacific, calling it a “mini retirement.” In another story, a Connecticut woman moved to Marseille, France, with her cats and described the city as a “revelation.”
