Max Verstappen Addresses Rumors of Potential Red Bull Exit Amid Season Struggles
Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, has publicly dismissed concerns about potentially leaving Red Bull Racing despite a challenging start to the 2025 season. The Dutch driver emphasized his focus on improving the team’s performance and maintaining his commitment to the squad, even as internal tensions and external speculation have surfaced.
A Turbulent Start to the Season

Verstappen’s recent performance at the Bahrain Grand Prix was a significant setback for Red Bull. The driver finished sixth, failing to challenge the leaders and highlighting the team’s struggles with competitiveness. This result added fuel to rumors about potential instability within the team, especially after Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko, expressed concerns about Verstappen’s future with the team.
Marko, speaking to Sky Sports, admitted to being “worried a lot” that Verstappen might consider leaving Red Bull. He pointed to the team’s inability to consistently match the pace of its rivals, which has been a recurring issue throughout the early part of the season.
Verstappen’s Response to Concerns
When asked about these concerns ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Verstappen remained focused on the task at hand. He acknowledged that the weekend in Bahrain was not ideal but stressed that his priority is to work on improving the car and finding solutions to the team’s challenges.
“I don’t know, to be honest,” he said when questioned about why Marko made those comments. “I just keep working, keep trying to improve the car. Naturally, Bahrain wasn’t a great weekend for us. I think we were all pretty disappointed with that.”
He continued to emphasize that the competition is tough and that his approach is to keep pushing forward. “We just keep on trying to improve the car, come up with new ideas to try on the car. The competition is tough. That’s how I go about my weeks, just trying to improve the situation.”
Tensions Within the Team
Despite his outwardly positive stance, there are signs that not everything is going smoothly within Red Bull. Verstappen has been linked with potential moves to Mercedes and Aston Martin, as he seeks to secure a fifth consecutive world title. However, his contract with Red Bull runs until 2028, and he has not officially indicated any plans to leave.
The team’s recent struggles have extended beyond the track. Verstappen recently made headlines when he defended his liking of an Instagram post criticizing Red Bull’s decision to swap drivers Liam Lawson and Yuki Tsunoda early in the season. This move sparked further speculation about the internal dynamics within the team.
A Mixed Performance So Far

Despite the challenges, Verstappen has shown flashes of strong performance this season. He has climbed the podium twice, finishing second in Australia and winning in Japan. These results highlight his ability to compete at the highest level, even if the team’s overall performance has yet to meet expectations.
However, the gap between Verstappen and his competitors has widened. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are currently ahead of him in the driver’s championship standings, putting pressure on Red Bull to deliver more consistent results.
Looking Ahead
As the season progresses, the focus will be on whether Red Bull can address the issues that have plagued their performance in the early races. Verstappen’s commitment to the team remains clear, but the question of whether the team can return to its dominant form will be critical in determining the rest of the season.
For now, Verstappen continues to focus on his role as a driver, emphasizing that his job is to perform on the track while leaving the speculation to others. “Just focus on commentating, I’ll focus on driving, and then we don’t need to think about any other scenarios,” he said during a press conference, adding a smile to his response.
