Some of the weapons are marked with antisemitic messages, including “6 million wasn’t enough” and “kill Donald Trump.” Another magazine features the name of Robert Bowers, who was convicted for killing 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018.
A Fascination with Mass Shooters
Westman’s writings express a deep fascination with notorious mass shooters, including Adam Lanza, who killed 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. The notebook also includes a diagram of the inside of a church that matches the layout of Annunciation Church. In one part of the video, the person filming stabs a knife into the drawing while saying, “ha, nice.”
Despite these troubling elements, the notebook states that the motivation behind the attack was not explicitly related to racism or white supremacy. Instead, the author claims the act was driven by personal distress, stating, “I do it because I am sick.”

Robin Westman, 23, graduated from Annunciation’s grade school in 2017, according to a yearbook photo obtained by CNN. His last known address was at his father’s home, about a 20-minute walk from the church. Neighbors described the family as friendly and well-liked. Jim White, a neighbor, mentioned that they gave him hundreds of cement blocks to create a planter for his front lawn.
The suspect’s mother worked at Annunciation from 2016 through 2021, according to social media posts. Westman attended the Minnesota Transitions Charter School for two months at the beginning of the 2017 school year, but it is unclear whether he graduated from high school.

In 2019, the suspect’s mother filed to legally change the suspect’s name from Robert Paul Westman to Robin M. Westman. A judge approved the petition in January 2020, noting that the suspect “identifies as a female and wants her name to reflect that identification.”
A search of state court records showed no criminal history for Westman, but some traffic citations in 2021 were noted. No prior arrests or convictions were reported.
