Saint Joseph’s University Band to Perform Oklahoma’s Music at Temple Football Game

Philadelphia, PA – The Saint Joseph’s University Hawk Band is slated to perform the University of Oklahoma’s fight songs at the Temple University football game this Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field. The unexpected collaboration arises from budget constraints preventing the “Pride of Oklahoma” marching band from traveling to non-conference games this season. The game is scheduled to kick off at noon.

According to Saint Joseph’s band director Ben Hemsley, the invitation was extended by Oklahoma’s band director, Brian Britt, just last Friday. Hemsley expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, emphasizing the spirit of friendly rivalry and the unique chance to perform alongside another Philadelphia band. The Hawk Band previously performed Oklahoma’s fight songs at an alumni event in Center City on Friday evening.

The decision has stirred mixed reactions among Temple University students. While some expressed playful jabs at Saint Joseph’s, others acknowledged the rare and valuable experience it presents for the Hawk Band. Mia Douglas, a senior in the Hawk Band, noted that this marks the band’s first performance at a football game, providing valuable experience for new members before their official season begins.

Despite the anticipation surrounding the game, opinions on Temple’s chances against the nationally ranked Oklahoma Sooners remain divided. While some Temple fans expressed hope for an upset victory, citing their new coach, others acknowledged the challenging matchup. Oklahoma fans, including Philadelphia-based alumni, expressed confidence in their team’s prospects. Gracie Johnson, an Oklahoma graduate, highlighted the shared passion between Sooner and Philadelphia sports fans.

Adding to the game’s intrigue, recent comments made by Oklahoma reporters, comparing Temple’s game day crowd to that of a high school game, have fueled the competitive spirit. Temple fans are eager for the Owls to defy expectations and demonstrate the strength of their home crowd. The upcoming game promises to be a unique event, showcasing both athletic competition and musical collaboration.
